*Photos: Contemporary kitchen/great room remodel+. The old kitchen was segregated from the rest of the home with a 7 ft. ceiling. Beckner Contracting removed the low ceiling to create a contemporary open plan environment. This required removing the central bearing wall and replacing it with a 30 ft. structural beam.

We installed a honed Taj Mahal quartzite 4 x 7 ft. island. The perimeter countertop is leathered quartzite. We also installed flooring, appliances (including the cooktop), lighting, cabinetry, plumbing, fixtures, electrical, and a wet bar. Our client specified a Kohler White Haven shop apron cast iron kitchen sink in sea salt. Because, she said, from her research, that the coating on cast iron is glossier than porcelain or fire clay which makes it easier to clean.
